Applying for a Job

As Steels grows, we are often recruiting for new talent in various departments and locations.  All postings are available online with a description and requirements.  If you don’t see a suitable posting but are interested in being considered for future opportunities to join our team, please submit your resume and a cover letter stating your areas of interest.  Resumes are kept for three months.

You can submit  your application using any of the following methods:

  • by E-Mail
  • by Mail
  • by Fax
  • by completing an application form at your local Steels branch

 Recruitment & Selection Process

Steels will review applications and assess skills and experience against the position requirements. This step in the recruitment process is used to determine if an applicant possesses the minimum qualifications or transferable skills required to fill the position.  From here, a short list of candidates is created and these individuals will be contacted.

Interview Process

Phone interviews are the next step. It is very important to provide your home phone number, cell phone number, or if possible, your private work phone number for us to reach you. So what can you do to increase your likelihood of making it through this step?  The best way is to clearly articulate your qualifications as they relate to the position.

Steels takes great pride in living the credo. As a result, we will take extra effort to ensure that new employees joining Steels will also embrace the credo.  The in-person interview step is one of the most intensive and important parts of the interview process.  Not only do we interview the applicant for the position specific qualifications, we also are looking for fit with the company.  This is also an opportunity for you to interview us.  Taking the extra time at this step will help to ensure a long and prosperous relationship with our new employees.

Reference Checks

Upon a successful interview, you will be asked to provide references from previous supervisors or managers.  You will also be asked to provide permission to verify your education and training.  Human Resources or a third party acting on behalf of Steels will contact your references to better understand your background and experience, and confirm a fit to the position and to Steels.

Assessments

Depending on the position, you may be asked to participate in a number of assessments – typically a reading, numerical or behavioral assessment. These tools provide another look into your skills and your fit with Steels and the position.

Employment Offer

The recruitment process can be long but you can see why we are interested in hiring the best person as our next new Steels employee. If you are the successful candidate, you will be contacted by phone and Human Resources will extend you a verbal offer of employment, which will be followed by a written offer letter specifying the conditions of your employment, key dates, briefly describe your benefits entitlements, and explain the items to bring on your first day of employment.

Joining Steels

Your first day at Steels is very important to you and Steels.  Our First Day orientation program allows our new employees to learn more about the company’s history and products and gain an understanding about how the new employee’s role fits into the company.
